Chapter 1

Dave is studying facts about India. He is inspired by one special Indian man. Have you ever heard of Gandhi? How did one man solve so many worldly problems? Read along with Mrs. Prall and think about Gandhi's impact.

Dave and Lynsey get into an argument at lunchtime. There are some harsh words in this chapter... feel free to substitute them when reading to younger children ("sush" instead of "shut up") as Mrs. Casenta does in her recording.

The game is on!!! The students have decided on the rules and now it's time to start tracking points. Listen along to Mrs. Messina to get the details.

The word is spreading quickly. Kids are talking about the rules: what's acceptable and what's not. The students start to practice how to give 3 word responses - it won't be easy. Mrs. Dickson explains more!

The contest begins at lunchtime. Ms. Hiatt is stunned when lunch period begins. The unsushables usually require a blow-horn... today they are quite the opposite! Mrs. Nazarian reads this chapter aloud.

When one boy breaks the silence, Ms. Hiatt starts to get some hints about what the unsushables are up to. Who started this odd event and what's it all about? Listen to Ms. Tirrell to find out!

At recess, the kids find ways to make noise and have fun without losing points. As a science teacher, Mrs. Marlow sees an opportunity coming! Listen along with Ms. Booth.

Mr. Burton, now already aware of what the fifth graders were up to, decided to change his lesson plan for last period. They ALL enjoyed the last class of the day! Now it was time to leave school, would it be easier to be quiet after school… or harder? Read along with our Fairfield Librarian - Ms. Jaime!

The fifth graders all handle their after school activities differently, but all remain silent. They use non-verbal hints, write notes, or make gestures to communicate. Ms. Hiatt calls an emergency after school meeting with the teachers at Laketon. Just what are they going to do about the silent Unsushables??? Most of the teachers want to put an end to this experiment (mostly because they aren’t controlling it) but some of them think they should enjoy the silence while it lasts. Well it’s the next morning, and Mrs. Hiatt calls an assembly with the fifth graders, where she makes her wishes very clear. Will the kids obey their principal??? Will the teachers support the principal’s decision??? Listen here with Mrs. Colon

The Unsushables are off to first period with their new “orders”, but Mrs. Hiatt is off to a meeting so it’s up to the teachers to follow through with the orders. Throughout the building, the teachers start to realize that the limited speech is rather refreshing and maybe they should enjoy it while it lasts. It’s no longer about boys vs. girls… it has become students vs. teachers – now this could be a problem! Read along with Mrs. Zincone.

Mrs. Hiatt is furious when lunch begins and nobody is talking. She yells with her bullhorn (even though the kids are silent). Dave feels like he’s being bullied into talking and ends up saying more than he should have. Although the kids are proud of him, what will the consequences be from Mrs. Hiatt?
